For Facilitators

Six weeks.
One room, tended.

A group is not six one-to-one sessions happening in the same room. It is a different instrument, with a different failure mode.

In a one-to-one session you hold one nervous system. In a group you hold the room, and the participants hold each other whether you planned for it or not. That is the entire opportunity and the entire risk.

  • Group Agreements, participant facing and printable, with signature lines.
  • Five co-regulation exercises that only work in a room, which is what a participant is actually paying a group for.

Why cohesion, and not content

Cohesion is the group-level analogue of the therapeutic alliance, and it is not a by-product of good material. A meta-analysis of 55 studies found a significant association between cohesion and outcome, and found that deliberate facilitator effort to build it measurably moved the result. The page most kits leave out

Week five is where groups go wrong. Someone opens something the room cannot hold, and you have forty minutes and no clinical mandate. This kit gives you the exact move, the sentence to say, and what to do in the ten minutes after the session ends.

It also states the uncomfortable half of the evidence in print: group work can harm as well as help, and badly run groups can produce worse outcomes than no group at all. The safeguards here are not paperwork.

This kit does not confer a clinical qualification, is not group psychotherapy training, and is not a substitute for training, licensure, insurance, supervision, or the scope-of-practice rules where you work. Group work carries risks that one-to-one work does not. You are responsible for practising within your competence.
